The Lake District is rife with opportunities to head outdoors and get a taste of adventure!
From swinging through the trees at a local Go Ape to speeding across the water at one of the many water sports centres, we are certain you’ll find a place to offer you the perfect Lake District adventure activity!
Here we take you through a number of activities in Cumbria that you can try as well as the region’s best activity providers…
Adventure North West are a mobile outdoor adventure company based within Lancashire and the South Lakes.
Run by fully qualified instructors, Adventure North West offer a range of outdoor activities including;
The activities are perfect for families, individuals, couples, families, hen and stag groups, and corporate events.
Derwent Water Marina is the perfect place to cater for all your water sport and mountain-based activity needs.
Visitors to the marina can have a go at sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, canyoning and hill walking.
Visitors can hire Kayaks, Canoes, Rowing Boats, Sailing Dinghies and Windsurfers. When you’re ready to have a break from exploring this great lake you can have picnics on the islands in the lake.
Based in Coniston, Summitreks offers the perfect blend of fun and excitement, with a wide range of water and land-based activities available. Programmes include; kayaking, Canadian canoeing, raft building, gorge scrambling, canyoning, aquaseiling, rock climbing, abseiling and adventure treks.
If the kids want to give their parents some space and free-time, then there is a special Children’s Adventure Day just for them during the summer holidays.

At the Keswick Climbing Wall, visitors can have a go at the rookery woods outdoor adventure play area, fly down the 170-metre zip wire or go on an adventure day, which lets visitors try a range of activities such as orienteering, archery, climbing, testing out the high ropes and going on the resident zip wire.
The Keswick Climbing Wall is open from 9am-6pm every day and is well worth a visit!
Newlands Adventure Centre provides a wide range of outdoor activities as well as indoor climbing for groups, families and individuals.
The centre offers beginner classes that teach people how to tie into their harness and how to belay (hold the ropes) for each other, whilst experienced climbers can test their skills on over 40 top ropes or in the bouldering area and 45 degree woody.

Owned and run by Johan and Emma Hoving, River Deep Mountain High specialise in offering a range of outdoor activities to visitors to the Lake District.
The activities that people can get involved in include:
Mountain Journeys really do ensure their customers experience the very best the Lake District has to offer. Families can take part in adventure days, guided walks, navigation skills courses, rock climbing, rock scrambling, gorge scrambling and abseiling.
Mountain Journeys offer a range of great rock climbing trips and some of the firm’s favourite starter crags are; Raven crag and Scout crags in Langdale, Shepherds crag in Borrowdale and Castle Rock of Triermain.
All customers safety equipment is provided, so you can concentrate on having loads of fun, no matter what the Lake District weather throws at you.
The Lake District Walker offers people the chance to take part in a range of activities such as Ghyll Scrambling, Scrambling and rock climbing, as well as offering navigation and winter skills training courses.
If you like the idea of splashing and scrambling up rocky terrain and waterfalls, then Ghyll Scrambling is right up your street. The Lake District Walker primarily takes groups to Stonycroft Beck in the North Lakes and to Stickle Ghyll in the South Lakes.
If you are a really adventurous family, then The Lake District Walker also offers overnight walks, and one-day and two-day adventure challenges.
Located in Whinlatter Forest is Whinlatter Go Ape, which offers visitors the chance to enjoy a treetop adventure and a forest Segway adventure.
The multi-award-winning treetop adventure and original forest adventure is set high in the canopy and visitors can enjoy two to three hours in the trees, taking on Zip Wires, Tarzan Swings, Rope Ladders and a variety of obstacles and crossings. As the highest Go Ape course in the country, visitors are promised spectacular views.
If that’s not enough, then the forest Segway adventure is a down-to-earth twist. People can jump on board all-terrain, self-balancing, electric Segways and explore Whinlatter Forest up-close and personal.
Grizedale tree top adventure is another hugely popular day out. Being built on the side of a hill means the views from the highest Go Ape Platform at 18 metres are spectacular.
It is not the incredible views that attract the crowds, however, but more the fact that you can swing through the canopy on zip wires and even the juniors of the group can get involved at the Tree Top Junior Adventure. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
This aerial adventure is a great day out for the whole family, with 35 exciting treetop challenges through the ancient woodland canopy – the outdoors has never been this much fun.
Ideal for families, friends, groups and celebrations, there are green treks for 5 years upwards and blue for those who would like a little more adventure. No experience or prior skill is required. It’s even a great adventure in the rain!
Located at the only Motorsports Association race circuit in Cumbria, which has been voted the best in the country in previous years, Cumbria Kart Racing run kart race meetings on the second weekend of each month to which the public can come and watch.
The British Championships visit the circuit twice a year – and the public can get access to the pits and drivers to chat and get information.
During the summer, Cumbria Kart Racing offer an arrive and drive night on Mondays between 5pm-8pm where all equipment is provided – kart, suits, helmets etc. – and the public can have a go on the 1,030 metre circuit for a very nominal charge. Corporate events can also be held at the track for parties of 10 or more.
A unique award-winning experience is what awaits visitors – the attraction is England’s last working slate mine and England’s first Via Ferrata!
There is something for everyone – take on the challenge of the Via Ferrata or visit the slate mines on one of three possible underground tours. Helmets and lamps are provided and no experience is necessary.
Located in the heart of the English Lake District, the Windermere Golf Club offers breathtaking views over Windermere and the surrounding fells.
Established in 1891, the course is referred to as a “miniature Gleneagles” by the golfing press. For keen golfers, it is certainly worth playing the course. If you are not much of a golfer, then the restaurant is certainly worth a visit, especially as you can take in the unbelievable scenery whilst tucking into some delicious food.
Beautifully situated and well kept, this par 70 course is ideal for those who enjoy a good walk with no real hills to contend with. Buggy hire is available if pre-arranged, and Club Hire is also available for Heart of the Lakes customers too.
Keen golfers staying in cottages in the Lake District should certainly visit Carus Green as the course has some challenging holes, especially the 16th.
This 18-hole course offers a delightful and varied experience for golfers of all abilities. The course has a par of 71 and measures 6,200 yards off the Championship tees.
Keswick Golf Course uses the natural features of the landscape, with tree-lined fairways and well-located greens combining to provide an unforgettable round of golf. There are also discounted Green Fees for Heart of the Lakes clients.
From Windermere turn right just past the Sun Inn at Crook and you will find Beckside Golf Course. There is no website, no booking facility and no Club House, which all contributes to the character of this course.
Seen by many as one of the best-kept secrets in the whole county, the course is a fascinating and challenging little 9-hole course that has been homegrown by its farmer/owner Mike Jackson.
It really is a super little course offering challenging Tee shots and more challenging Greens.
At only £10 per round, it’s worth paying the money just for the views from the 5th Tee.
