“We've been visiting the lakes for the past 15 years usually staying in Keswick.”

“Nice property but the lack of cleanliness is an issue.”

It took 3 attempts to clean the grime off the dining room table. Skirting boards, top of fire and back of tv very dusty. Floors dirty, and cushion covers stained. Cutlery tray had a 2 inch black hair and crumbs in it. Crockery cupboards had dust/crumbs and door front to w/machine had 2 large runs of stains all the way down to the floor. Spent first couple of hours cleaning so at least cleaner for next guests but still needs a deep clean. Woodwork needs repainting in kitchen and hall. Heavily yellow stained toilet seat needs replaced. All simple fixes that would make this a lovely property.

“The property had everything you could need.”

Loved playing scrabble. Was books and dvds. Thank you for the procecco was a lovely touch. Saw lots of birds and a deer. Amazing walks from the house. Owner was very helpful let us know when holiday home was ready. Loved so much have booked to go back next year. Our dog thought was amazing. Views are so nice when rained on our last day was so nice sat in watching rain looking at views. Our best holiday in the lakes.

“Understood that had many steps but didn't know it was such a climb up hill, this was problem for one of us with breathing problems, had to get car out on return to pick up from bottom to apartment.”

Felt cleanliness was not up to standard, upon moved item on kitchen worktops found many flies, toaster was full of crumbs. Overall very dusty, cobwebs aplenty. Scaffolding and roofers ruined view. Overall won't be returning.

“Location superb for central Lakes and access to fells including Fairfield Horseshoe.”

Everything compact, comfortable and well presented. High position affords great views and this must be the most private of all the apartments at Wood Close. Squirrels are always a bonus here and they are so tame. No wonder we keep coming back. One disappointment: one full toilet roll is not enough for two people for a week; you do not expect to have to shop for toilet rolls on holiday!

“Having stayed at Helm Crag twice previously we already knew what an excellent property Helm Crag was.”

Helm Crag is thoughtfully decorated, well equipped, and superbly located. The owners have obviously carefully planned and maintained the property and this care and consideration results in it lacking nothing. As such our stay at Helm Crag was conducive to a relaxing week and enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. The location is ideal for a relaxing stay within easy walking distance of Grasmere village but equally perfect for peace and quiet away from the traffic and tourists. The views from the accommodation are spectacular whatever the weather and even in bad weather the impressive feature window gives an ever changing vista across Grasmere lake and the fells beyond. Also, the visiting wildlife that come to the site are a joy to behold making the stay even more special. Thanks again to the owners, Alan and Suzanne, who have again provided a fantastic holiday property and made our stay in Grasmere an enjoyable one. No doubt a further booking will be forthcoming in the future!

“We had a splendid week at Helm Crag apartment, which was comfortable and clean with tasteful and quality furnishings etc.”

The view from the picture window was lovely, overlooking the lake and the accommodation in a peaceful and relaxing spot, but only a few minutes walk into Grasmere. We were able to just walk from the door and didn’t move the car all week! The icing on the cake was feeding and watching the red squirrel which came very day, even when we were sat out one evening with a glass of wine. Wonderful holiday, thank you.

“We had a superb week at Helm Crag.”

The apartment was very comfortable, well equipped and perfect for our needs. We were left a much appreciated welcome pack of Prosecco and squirrel food! The red squirrels visited every day, as soon as we put food in their special feeder. It was difficult at times to tear ourselves away from that amazing view, but we did, as there are so many lovely walks straight from the door. Round Grasmere, Rydal Water and Loughrigg Terraces or out of the back gate and up to Alcock Tarn in one direction or Rydal via the Coffin Route in the other. When we had a minor issue with the TV, Alan, the owner, was very quick to respond and sort it out - with a brand new one! The weather was magnificent and we rounded off a wonderful week with a delicious dinner at the highly recommended Jumble Room.

“What a wonderful stay we had at Helm Crag!”

Everything was great - the comfortable bed, ample storage for clothes, the big fluffy towels in the bathroom, the well equipped kitchen, the cozy living room, and of course the location. The view from the main window was spectacular - we almost didn’t want to go out each day but instead keep watching out the window to see what birds, deer, or aircraft would go past! Not to mention checking on the red squirrels from the kitchen of course. Top tip - pick up some bird food & keep the feeders stocked throughout your stay, you won’t be disappointed in the array of birds it brings to the garden.

“What a lovely place to spend a week in the Lakes - perfect location, really easy to complete a range of walks from the door, or pop into Grasmere.”

The apartment itself was so comfortable and cosy. There were lots of nice touches - the prosecco, the toiletries, the very fluffy towels - they felt like a luxury! Just wanted to highlight that I think the bottom of the fridge/skirting board could use securing as it fell off a couple of times when I opened the fridge door, but very minor point amongst an otherwise perfect stay. I had a great week and will definitely be coming back :)

“We had the most delightful long weekend here!”

The property was cosy with a view that was hard to pull yourself away from. We spent our mornings doing hikes in the fells and our afternoons watching the birds from the window. This was a car free holiday for us so the location of Helm Crag was perfect, we took the bus from Windermere station to Dove Cottage and from there it’s a five minute walk to the door! Every morning we’d start a hike straight from the property. Ambleside is within walking distance and there are so many decent places to eat in Grasmere (and a well stocked Co-op!). You can see how much care and thought has gone into the design of the property and this added to its cosiness. We’re already looking forward to planning our next trip!

Beautiful views over the lake and only 10 minutes walk into Grasmere centre. The owner was very helpful with a minor query we had and also advised us when the property was ready for our arrival. Games, DVD's and walking maps came in very useful.

That is until we stayed at Helm Crag. It was truly a home from home, with entertainment, information and thoughtfully provided extras in abundance. You will be pleased to know that has since been rectified. The path and steps have been checked since your stay and we're pleased to confirm that all is well regarding the surface etc. The path and steps would have been jet washed earlier this year but unfortunately this has not been possible to date because of, primarily, bad weather through spring and summer. It is also well located just outside the village with private parking. The only downside is the steep walk up the hill then steps to access the accommodation but there are walks onto the fells from the front door. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Perfect size for a couple and a dog, with lots of creature comforts and beautiful views. Very well kitted out with a new bathroom done to a high standard. Lots of amenities on the doorstep just a short walk into Grasmere, with a bus stop just at the bottom of the hill for connections to anywhere in the Lakes. Really perfect location. “What a beautiful apartment!”

Already booked for another stay later this year. Although previous occupancy had a dog, hairs were still evident but having owned dogs ourselves for over 54 years we appreciate they are hard to eradicate! Previous occupancy had also failed to replace a cracked glass but as I managed to break two myself, all three were replaced. The wildlife from the window (s) was superb! “Well appointed cottage with a great view from the lounge window over the lake.”

Very comfortable bed and hot powerful shower. The little extras Kitchen roll, Tin foil, washing up liquid and other toiletries were a bonus as I usually have to buy these based on other cottages we have stayed in. Also got chance to see the Red squirrels on the bird feeder. Would be nice to stay in the summer months to enjoy the view into the evening.

The facilities were perfect, the decor and fittings were modern but in keeping. Everything was clean and tidy on our arrival, the living room seating was really comfortable as was the bedroom. The view from the living room window was wonderful even on a dull day. If you have an interest in wildlife, there are a multitude of birds to be seen through the kitchen door, a selection of tits, nuthatch, Robin and Jackdaw. There are two chairs and a table outside which is a great spot for enjoying a morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. What’s not to like?

“A lovely apartment with great views from the window.”

The apartment was very comfortable and well equipped. The property is in a great location with walks from the door. The property did smell of dogs when we first arrived perhaps as we do not have dogs we noticed the smell so windows were opened. In all other cottages we have stayed a pint of milk is usually supplied for a nice cup of tea on arrival after a long journey. Sadly here that was not the case.

We're so sorry Helm Crag smelt of dogs on your arrival which we hadn't noticed when we prepared Helm Crag in the morning. We would normally leave windows open but the weather may have prevented it on the day of your arrival. We do have air freshener available in the bathroom if necessary. Thank you for your feedback regarding milk, we'll review this and try to come up with a solution. This second visit did not disappoint and the superb weather only served to make our stay more enjoyable. The view from the accommodation was as impressive as always and the surrounding wildlife did not disappoint. The bathroom refurbishment was excellent and tastefully done. The accommodation was clean as always and the whole property provides a well equipped and homely base from which to enjoy your holiday. Whether that be relaxing in the property enjoying the view over Grasmere or using it as a base for day hikes. The property is faultless and its positioning second to none. Consequently, we’ve had another excellent holiday staying in Helm Crag and another booking will definitely be forthcoming. Thanks to all involved.

“The communication with and information from Sykes throughout the booking process was very good.”

The flat was well equipped and very comfortably furnished. The provision of a range of items like cleaning items, bin bags, dishwasher tablets, washing capsules etc was much appreciated. The newly refurbished bathroom is excellent and the view from the lounge of Grasmere lake is beautiful. We had a walking holiday and there are a wide range of walks directly from the flat and also out of Grasmere, which is a 15 minute walk away. The location and flat are well suited to taking a dog. Our Labrador had a great time.

The apartment is well maintained, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. The view from the lounge through the picture window is to die for. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see a red squirrel but the bird life was abundant. The only downside was the weather which was inclement. On a personal note, we were able to meet the owner who helped me out with a football conundrum which was unexpected.

The property is of high standard and the pictures on the website don’t fully do it justice. The views are stunning and the position of the property is perfect for forgetting the car and walking everywhere! The amount of wildlife that visited only further served to make a stay inside more enjoyable. So much so we invested in extra peanuts for the squirrels that served to attract other wildlife which was a joy. The only thing we missed was a teapot in the property to make flasks of tea when out walking but not enough to stop us rebooking another week before we left!

“Our stay at Helm Crag was wonderful, as always.”

The view is amazing, the interiors beautiful and walks from the doorstep aplenty. The wildlife outside the door is delightful but didn't stop the dog being able to cool off in the shade (on lead!) after a long walk. “We absolutely loved the apartment.”

The decor was really special, with a kind of cheerful vintage feel, it felt really cosy straight away. The view from the lounge window of the lake and mountains was spectacular. We regularly saw red squirrels outside the kitchen door. Very comfy bed, great shower and bath. Really good dvd selection, well chosen walking material and even an OS map specially printed centring on the property. Loads of walks from the door and a 10 minute walk to Grasmere village. Just perfect really, we are booking again for next year.

The addition of usb charging sockets was very welcome as everything nowadays seems to come with charging via usb. When reporting a problem that was out of the owners control he made contact within an hour and kept me informed.

Great views from the picture window, perfectly situated for walks, very high standard of all decor and fittings . Comfortable bed. WiFi a bit hit and miss . The cottage is perfect, but I only gave Heart of the Lakes 7 because your website no longer works properly

“This cottage is just right for two: clean, comfortable and modern with an all-important view of the lake.”

We've been coming to another apartment in this complex for many years and I think this one is probably the only apartment to have its own private garden. Two points: there is a stale smell throughout which we traced to the washing machine; and one toilet roll for two people for a whole week is never enough - rather niggardly when you consider what goodwill one extra toilet roll would generate.

Warm, comfortable and well equipped. The addition of a stand alone microwave since my last visit is a nice touch. Views from the property are superb and red squirrels feeding less than 10 ft away from the kitchen door !

The view from the picture window was amazing. Two red squirrels paid us visits every day, and we also saw deer in the grounds too. The apartment was very comfortable with every thought gone into making it a perfect stay, even down to the torch to use at night to let our little dog outside. Highly recommended and would most definitely return…

“One of the best views of Grasmere lake we've had from a cottage.”

Huge picture window with views. The path from the car had steeper /more steps and a slope more steep than described in the cottage's description. Some of the steps were quite high. Struggled on arrival with suitcase and shopping as have kneeand back issues. path was a bit overgrown, cut back later in the week, could have done with more.

A bedroom to the right of the entrance and 4 steps lead you down to the spacious kitchen with electric hob, dishwasher and washer dryer. The back door from the kitchen leads you to a secret garden, with ample outdoor seating in a beautiful woodland setting. The open plan sitting/ dining room is a really sociable space with comfortable seating and dining table for hearty breakfasts while you plan your day, Smart TV ready for your Netflix & Disney + password, DVD player and electric fire, a music system has a CD player, DAB and Bluetooth . Views from the lounge are relaxing and serene over Grasmere Lake. Thermostatically controlled electric heating and underfloor heating in the bedroom and bathroom. GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family has been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century, and Grasmere Lake. Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere, and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
