“Standard of equipment & furnishings good.”

We certainly appreciated the great shower after a hot day walking. The size of the garden was a welcome surprise, nice to sit out in the evening. Cleanliness not so good, for example we had to clean the dirty grill pans in the oven before use. We hoovered before we left and felt that we left it cleaner than we found it.

“A really lovely holiday cottage in a fantastic spot.”

The owners have thought of everything to make sure that our holiday was as close to home as possible. They are in the process of updating the kitchen and have clearly made some lovely improvements to the bathroom and main bedroom recently. The living area is big enough for four adults to stay comfortably and the addition of the downstairs cloakroom/utility meant that there was somewhere to store wet gear/stuff and a second loo. Outside space a real sun-trap.

Spacious cottage. Downstairs toilet a bonus. Well equipped kitchen. Comfy beds. Shower is great. Secure private courtyard garden to the rear. We had a lovely stay. Thank you for having us :)

“Low Fold is a lovely cottage which is a short walk to shops, cafes, walks and to the lake.”

The cottage itself is quaint. The garden was lovely and secure for our dogs. It was also a sun trap. The kitchen was well equipped. The bed was a bit squeaky when you turn over but you get used to it. Will definitely be back as we have been coming to Ambleside for over 40 years and have stayed at many cottages. Thanks for letting us stay.

“We enjoyed our stay here ,the location is fantastic for town and countryside.”

The cottage is lovely and outside space very pleasant. As we visited over Christmas I would of expected some Christmas decorations, even a small Christmas tree would have been nice. The cottage itself was a little tired in general and some of the utensils and crockery needed washing prior to use as they were either dusty or had not been washed properly. The beds were comfortable but was no hair dryer.

“We had a really lovely stay.”

When we got into the cottage it was warm and cosy. Nice little outside area with seating and well maintained. Inside was clean and tidy. Lots of plates & cups. Upstairs bathroom big. Bedrooms are ok size but only fault was the double matress was a bit uncomfortable for me. Downstairs cloakroom could do with a bit of paint. Maybe a welcome gift would give it a special touch. All in all good Central Place to stay as walk into Ambleside in 10mins.

“Lovely little cottage, perfectly formed, ideally located.”

Very clean, comfortable and well equipped. With THE MOST WONDERFUL SHOWER!!! One small thing, after a long journey, tea/coffee on arrival would have been great (there were teabags but no milk, coffee or sugar). Absolutely agree with idea to encourage use of local shops, but a small milk and just enough tea/coffee to get you to next morning would have been nice, especially if one arrives late in day.

“We love Lowfold cottage but some things could really do with updating.”

These are the cushions and curtains in living room and main bedroom. Also it's a shame that a lot of the artwork, upstairs, doesn't reflect the local area. We stayed in a cottage in settle and they had inexpensive cards by local artists framed. The place felt loved.

“Such a wonderful cozy cottage.”

We felt so homey right from the start. The age and look was just lovely for what we wanted and needed. The little courtyard/garden was a great touch for the dog. We will be booking here again hopefully.

“The cottage is in a good location, handy for the centre of Ambleside and very close to Waterhead.”

The kitchen was well equipped and the shower was very good. We weren't able to use the patio much but it was pleasant to sit outside. The style is a bit tired and it was dusty with lots of cobwebs. We used to have a 17th century cottage ourselves and know they can be tricky to clean. Overall good but maybe a bit of attention needed.

“This is a beautiful little cottage in a perfect spot.”

5 minute walk into town and just 5 minutes walk to the lake. Nice to see the owner’s have listened to other feedback and put in a downstairs toilet in and the upstairs bathroom is lovely with its update. What did let the property down was whoever they have cleaning for them, they are letting this lovely cottage down. When we arrived my husband found himself cleaning large amounts of dog mess. On the upper path way and also patio. I do agreed this was also for the owners of the dog to do but should also be checked on. Paying what we paid I don’t expect to clean up after others. Also we found the property could benefit from a good dusting throughout and found plates that needed to be re washed. On an overall we loved every minute of our break and we would book again. This cottage has so much going for it.

It is always lovely and warm. It is in a great position with easy walking access to Ambleside. Some of the cooking utensils could do with updating now and the carpets could benefit from a clean. We did not have any issues with the shower leaking despite notices about this in the bathroom. I understand the bathroom is due for refurbishing,

“Super cottage.”

Incredibly well equipped with everything we needed. Beautifully cosy and warm. We thought it might be a bit of a squeeze for the five of us and our dog, but it felt just right! Superb location. The only thing missing was a view from a window, but you can’t have everything and with only a 5 minute walk from the front door the views are everywhere! We particularly liked walking out of the front door to do the Loughrigg circular on a crisp, blue skied autumn day. We would highly recommend this property. Thank you to the owners and Sykes properties for great and easy communication via the app.

“We really enjoyed our stay at Lowfold cottage.”

There were only 2 of us, so the cottage felt very spacious. It was well equipped, comfortable and warm with plenty of hot water. The underfloor heating downstairs makes the stone flags very toasty. It’s very well located just a short walk from the village, and similarly short walk to the lakeside/ pier. The patio garden with table and chairs was much appreciated when the sun came out, and there was even a view of some hills. We didn’t bring our dog, but he would have loved it too!

“The cottage was purfect!”

The 1st visit with our puppy! He was in the crate! Ideal location and within walking distance for the town and up to Jenkins Crag! On the cottage front it was clean and everything we needed for a week! Would definitely recommend and we’ll stay again!

“Lovely cottage in a very handy location.”

Just one thing was very annoying. We always recycle as much as we can at home, but there is no recycling collection at the cottage. The notes suggest taking it to Rothay Holme waste site. We walked over there only to be told they could not accept it. We had to put it in ordinary bin, as we were travelling home by train.

“The cottage was comfortable, warm and nicely furnished.”

The location was great, a short walk from the town centre, in the heart of the lakes. As one couple and two single adults, we had a really lovely long weekend, with a number of home cooked meals together. The location was a bit of a surprise, much less garden and closer to the road than the photos might lead you to believe. Two of the bedrooms were very small for children rather than couples. The shower was excellent. The dining / sitting room was very comfortable and well suited to comfortable time together. The only disappointment was the lack of basic supplies. We had to buy quite a few things (washing up liquid, cooking oil, toilet paper, etc) that I would have expected to find in a self-catering cottage.

It was not very clean. Cobwebs everywhere. Most of the mugs were old and dirty. The crockery, cutlery and glassware were dirty. We had to wash everything before using. The shower needs attention and updating. The final straw was seeing a later week in February available £200 less than we had paid.

“We had a gorgeous holiday in The Lakes but having stayed in Lowfold Cottage 7 years ago we were very surprised to see that the carpet on the stairs - which was dirty back then - is still the same and the double bed in the main bedroom is an old uncomfortable mattress.”

Really pleased about the kitchen, really well stocked with everything we needed and more but the cleaning was very surface. Every corner and lamp switch tucked away gave you a handful of cobwebs. The location is still great but the area has got busier so you hear the road more and the immediate neighbours allow their dog to bark to get back in after a morning wee as a regular alarm very early every day. Also the shower head needs urgent attention at it doesn’t stay in place and simply swings around the face the wall. The main thing that we are really shocked about and would stop us returning is the fact you don’t provide a recycling facility. The recycling bin is there. We know this service is available but perhaps you just choose not to pay? Whatever the reason we are totally shocked this is the case.

We agree about the recycling. it seems to be a local issue for holiday-let properties in the area. We have not been given an option to pay for recycling services as an individual property. I am not sure if this matter can be progressed between the local authority and Sykes cottages. We take our recycling to the facility in the car park near Ambleside Manor. Property Owner

“Our stay was delayed until 4pm for supposed extra COVID cleaning.”

The reality was the cleaner turned up at 3.10pm as we happened to be outside when she did . Consequently we couldn’t get into the cottage until 4.30 as she hadn’t finished at 4pm . She was obviously rushing as the house was dirty. The grill pan was so disgusting that the wife photographed it . In an effort to clean the cottage ourselves we got the hoover out . The smell from the hoover was terrible. I am not sure when it was last emptied but trust me we had to buy an air freshener after using it . The garden hadn’t been tended to and was untidy. We had the plug in the bathroom sink stuck so I walked to the Heart of the Lakes office to report it as your paperwork said you were open from 10am on a Sunday. The office was locked with no one around. Finally after a phone call someone did promptly turn up and fixed the problem. We have stopped at this property before and on these occasions we were happy but the property is now looking a little tired. The beds are uncomfortable and the carpets particularly the stair one are very dirty.

The property

This stone built cottage really does have oodles of character, retaining original features such as exposed beams and flagged floors. It is one of the oldest cottages in Ambleside, thought to be built from stones from the old Roman fort. We are sure it will prove to be a most popular holiday destination at any time of the year. With Ambleside's bustling centre just a short stroll away you will be well placed to enjoy all the village facilities, a wide choice of restaurants, individual local shops, excellent cinemas, bowls, tennis and mini-golf. The choice of walks from the door will be more than enough to keep you busy all week whilst a ten minute stroll will bring you to picturesque Lake Windermere, with its boat hire and cruises - a delight in any season. Accommodation: Small patio garden with steps leading down to front entrance. Hallway with under stairs area for coats and boots. A sociable and welcoming open plan lounge/dining room/kitchen which is L-shaped (TV with freesat, DVD, and gas stove) with character features and back door to patio garden. Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes.
