“Second visit (first 2020), this time with our daughter and family: Starts with important negative/ends on positive.”

.. NEGATIVE: in 2020 we reviewed the beds were extremely hard and uncomfortable giving very poor sleep quality, ending with backache by the end of our week's stay at this property - we said we would not revisit because of it - however, due to its location being very convenient to Brockhole we also thought it would be a good base to bring our daughter with her three small children. 5yrs on we thought about rebooking for a second visit with them so checked out more recent Guest Reviews online but ...

5yrs on we thought about rebooking for a second visit with them so checked out more recent Guest Reviews online but was shocked to read that many many others had said the same about the hard beds - so presumed the mattresses had not been replaced since our last visit: Thinking how we could overcome the problem to offer all of us 7nights better sleep - we came up with the idea of Camping Roll Mats and made the booking. We purchased 8 Roll Mats - not cheap and which took up a whole seat in the car to transport from Bristol - and crossed fingers that they might help. We put one in each under the base sheets for us to sleep on (shouldn't have to do this - never had this elsewhere). Thankfully it worked well enough to get through the week with no major complaints from anyone - a second week would have been pushing it !! POSITIVES: Plenty of room for everyone / 3 WCs / 3 Parking Places / Lovely Garden / Very Convenient Base for Brockhole and Bus Stops. SUMMARY: PLEASE replace he mattresses!!!

The property

Built in the late 18th century, Ecclerigg Old Farm offers comfortable holiday accommodation in any season. One of a small cluster of former farm buildings, the farmhouse sits well back from the road, mid-way between Ambleside and Troutbeck Bridge. This is an excellent base for a walking or touring holiday with all of central Lakeland easily accessible by car or bus. The National Park Visitor Centre at Brockhole is just a short stroll away from where lake cruises can be taken on beautiful Lake Windermere. The grounds are open all year and there are footpaths down to the lake. There is also a seasonal teashop and many interesting activities for visitors with a published programme of events and exhibitions. There are several hotels close by where you can eat out in style without using the car. Ambleside and Windermere have excellent local shopping. Buses stop at the end of the drive. Accommodation: Rear door into spacious entrance area - lots of room for storing your outdoor gear. Downstairs wc with basin. Breakfast kitchen and separate utility room. Cosy beamed sitting room with feature stone wall and open fire (TV, DVD, CD player & free wi-fi broadband). Door to porch and garden. Separate dining room with some extra, comfy seating and a second TV, ideal for quiet relaxation. Stairs from the sitting room to the first floor where there are four bedrooms - the master double is en-suite (bath, basin and wc), good sized twin bedroom with extra single bed, second twin room and single bedroom. Further bathroom with shower, basin and wc. There are pleasant outlooks from all the main windows - some over fields and a neighbouring garden, others to the 'farmyard' behind the property. The cottage is comfortably furnished and cosy with gas central heating and hot water. Outside: Enclosed rear garden, with lawn and shrubs, accessed from the sitting room. Garden table and chairs provided. Parking for two cars (one in garage).

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
