“It was our first time staying in Ambleside and a what a lovely property to stay in.”

Its location is great for both a walk into town but also to the waterfront. The cottage itself was extremely clean and presented as listed. The only slight improvements would be the power of the shower (although there are plans for a bathroom refurbishment in 2026) and an addition of some extra kitchen utensils such as bigger dishes. All in all a very positive stay at Cringol Cottage.

“I thought the cottage was lovely.”

However the electric shower was non thermostatic and very difficult to control the temperature, when you get the new bathroom I'd definitely run a thermo mixer from the unvented cylinder. Also, there was no washing machine, it was my fault that I didn't check but as we stayed a week with a 3 year old was a bit annoyed. if I get a holiday in lakes again I would check , totally my fault for not checking . Overall if I came with just my wife for 3 days I'd come but longer with my daughter I'd look elsewhere. Thanks for a lovely cottage otherwise.

“Lovely little cottage with everything we needed.”

Small but perfect for our needs. We especially liked the off road parking and the proximity to both the town centre and Waterhead. Loved the open plan layout and the tasteful decor. Everything seemed freshly decorated with nice carpets throughout and beautiful quality soft furnishings and bedding. Plenty of crockery, cutlery etc The cleanliness of the property was very high overall but just a slight niggle was the shower curtain, which was stained with mildew at the bottom, and the dish drainer in the kitchen which had grime and scum in the grooves and in the cutlery compartment. Let’s just say I left the dish drainer cleaner than I found it. These were two very tiny things but I feel it should be mentioned as they are both easy to fix. We had a brilliant stay at Cringol Cottage and we would definitely stay again. Highly recommend it.

“Everything was just as described.”

It was very clean and comfortable and the new windows and doors have really improved the comfort and quietness. Fully refurbished throughout it is a welcome place to stay after long walks on the fells. Very easy to access Ambleside as it is such a short stroll away. We have stayed here a few times now and will continue to book if it is available.

“Clean homely accommodation.”

A little noisy from traffic as adjacent to one way system. Toaster didn't automatically pop so had to stay watching it. Faulty smoke alarm. Both issues reported on leaving. Overall though a nice well maintained accommodation

The property

Cringol Cottage is a wonderful Lakeland stone-built cottage in a location that makes it a very popular holiday home at any time of year. The cottage is situated in a neat courtyard just moments away from the centre of Ambleside and Lake Windermere. The cottage is well presented with quality furnishings and equipment and is maintained to a high standard. Find the front door entrance where you are welcomed by a heated, inner porch with handy hanging/drying space for all the walking gear from your many adventures. Continue through to an open-plan, well-furnished sitting/dining room where you can unwind and flick on the TV. Find the fully-equipped kitchen area at one end and help the designated chef of the group whip up a hearty meal that you can all enjoy around the dining table. When the evening draws to a close, climb the stairs to the first floor to find a sleek bathroom where you can choose between a soothing soak or refreshing shower ahead of sloping off to sleep in either the double or single bedroom. If you can tear yourself away from this idyllic dwelling, take a short walk into the heart of Ambleside where you can find an array of eateries including cafes, restaurants and bars; the perfect setting for date nights or just to enjoy a well-earned evening meal! The nearby attractions make this property a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, try your hand at tennis, bowls, mini golf are enjoy a leisurely stroll through Rothay Park which houses a flowing river and children’s playground for little ones; there is also Borrans park where you can admire scenic views and otters, which tend to rise quite early. Alternatively explore the other nearby Lakeland towns such as Windermere where you can roam around the famous lake, enjoy a lake cruise or be more adventurous by taking to the water on kayaks and paddle boards! AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
