“The microwave needs replacing, although it works, it is very outdated.”

The beds in the attic room- 2 of which were uncomfortable. The bed nearest the stairs was the best of the three. A double duvet was stuffed into a single duvet cover for these three beds. Not really acceptable in my opinion. Otherwise a most enjoyable holiday in a beautiful location, and very cosy by the fireside.

Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay at Rock Cottage. We are glad to hear you had a lovely holiday. Since your stay we have replaced the microwave with a Samsung oven microwave. We have also replaced all three single mattresses with top of the range Vispring pocket sprung mattresses. We have asked the Housekeeper to use double duvet covers in the future. “Rock cottage is in a great place to explore Ambleside and the surrounding area.”

The parking is a bonus as there is no other parking near the property although a sign would be useful as it was dark when we arrived and a little difficult to locate. We telephoned the office for guidance and were told to drive through the gate, don't do this as the parking is on the right before the gate. The cottage states there is a log burner but there was no wood, matches or anything else to enable a fire to be made so we didn't know if there was an issue so we chose not to try starting a fire in the fireplace. This did mean that it was a little chilly sometimes as the weather was cold and we couldn't find anywhere to adjust the heating. The beds and bedding are lovely and clean and comfortable and the towels are big and fluffy. Overall the cottage is great and we would definitely stay here again.

Beamed ceilings, flag floors, deepset windows and a fine original period Victorian range all contribute to the character feel of Rock Cottage, which is set just off the road on the outskirts of Ambleside in the little hamlet of Clappersgate, close to the head of Lake Windermere. Coleridge's two sons lodged here in 1808 and the Grade II listed 17th century cottage offers all the comforts of home in a traditional setting. Lake Windermere can be seen from the upstairs front window. There are footpaths from the door to Todd Crag leading up to Loughrigg and fine mountain walking in the Langdale Valley is just a short drive away. Accommodation: Entrance porch with couple of steps into beamed sitting room with Victorian cast-iron range with open fire, TV with freesat channels, DVD,wi-fi , Modern fitted Shaker kitchen with up to date appliances and large table for family meals. The cottage is on three floors with two double bedrooms on the first floor - one with en-suite shower, basin and wc. Separate wc on half landing. Family bathroom has bath with shower over plus basin. Further stairs to top floor family room with three single beds, pitched ceiling, cruck beams and velux window. Dressed flag floors with rugs at ground level. Furnishings are comfortable and traditional with many pictures and good fabrics. Rock Cottage is deceptively spacious and offers a cosy welcome to guests in any season. Outside: There is a garden bench just outside the front porch. A useful outside storeroom will take care of your wet walking gear and maybe even a couple of bikes. Private off-road parking for two cars about 100 yards from the cottage. Ambleside village 1 mile, lake Windermere three quarters of a mile.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
