“A beautful house in a lovely setting, great for exploring the Lakes and Yorkshire.”

The cottage has everything you need, a well stocked kitchen with every utensil you can think of, comfy beds, places to relax, a selection of books and games to play and lovely views. It has a real home from home feel. We will definitely be returning in the future.

“Our stay was over New Year, our party consisted of my husband and three daughters age 12, 16 and 17.”

We loved the feel of the cottage, cosy and decorated very well. Log burning fire in main living area and electric in the den living quarter. My main draw was the streams that run alongside the cottage itself, absolutely beautiful, with the heavy rain they were noisy but with the UPVC windows meant only slight sounds from within. Nearby Sedbergh is a beautiful little town with cute shops and we went on a walk as mentioned in the cottage (along with other walking guides) which was Sedbergh nature walk. Top tips that other travellers mentioned on this site were useful - yes you do need to bring your own logs, hand wash for bathrooms and only 2 toilet rolls supplied. Basics were in hand such as tea, coffee and biscuits. I would definitely stay again and we enjoyed our stay so much.

“This is a warm, well equipped and comfortable house in an interesting and I think under-rated area.”

It benefitted from having the Lakes nearby, which reduces the tourist demand in this area, making it more enjoyable. It could do with a washing machine, but I'm not sure where you'd put it. There were no logs for the log burner so we didn't bother getting that going. Access is tight and in our case aggravated by a bike trailer, so be prepared for some wriggling and to actually turn into the property I had to back up into the road opposite to get the car more square on to the drive. Turning the car round to avoid backing it out over the bridge you have to cross in the drive was a bit more wriggling. Shame about the noise from the M6 but in October we weren't spending a lot of time outside in the interesting garden. Loved the running water past the house - if I lived there some micro-hydro generation would have to be explored.. Only having drinking water in the kitchen came as a surprise but not a showstopper. We found there to be more than enough to do in the area for a week, with some challenging cycling (that involved a lot of pushing in my case!) to be had and Dentdale being the highlight. Make sure your bike brakes are in tip-top order as there are some steep slopes to descend. The grade II listed Rigmaden bridge is closed and looks like it has been for sometime so if you are plotting a Lune Valley route that involves it don't get caught out like we did.

We do try to make clear on the Sykes website there is no washing machine, and that wood is not provided so guests hopefully know what to expect. “We had a lovely stay at Half Island House and loved it's seclusion.”

Everything was provided, well stocked kitchen and super comfortable beds. The gardens are beautiful with the babbling stream running through but we couldn't spend too long sat out because the midges were savage and we forgot to pack repellent! We enjoyed walking on the Dales Way and it was very interesting to talk to all the Dales Way travelers who passed by the house. We had a power cut on our second day so had to go out for breakfast but this was resolved when we returned. The only downside we found was the close proximity to the M6 and noise from the motorway traffic but there is nothing anyone can do about that. Overall, a wonderful little break away from it all :)

“Lovely, cosy cottage with everything you need in a brilliant location between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.”

With the Dales Way literally on your doorstep! The brook running next to the cottage makes for a very peaceful and relaxing setting. Easy to get to the Lakes and local attractions. Sedbergh's 'Sheepfest' and Saturday market was great fun!. A hugely enjoyable and relaxing family break.

“I reported that we had no hot water on the Monday the owner asked me to try resetting the system and see if it worked properly over night, I also told her that the flush was broken on the upstairs toilet, she sent a handyman to look at the toilet he said he would return with parts and repair it which he didn’t.”

The owner sent an electrician to try to sort the problem with the water but it was broken then we heard nothing else about the problems and returned home early on Saturday We would stay again but preferably with hot water which really is a basic necessity

So sorry the hot water stopped working during your stay. All issues have been fixed should you choose to return (but the parts took a few days). Sykes called for updates and tried to contact you. Thankfully the power shower gives constant hot water. Property Owner

“The cottage was exceptionally good in respect of it’s position as a base for a walking holiday and the views were delightful.”

The kitchen was well equipped and modern but we never found the advertised washing machine! The beds were very comfortable. On the negative side, first impressions upon arrival were poor. Outside and porch very tired/flaky paint everywhere. The keysafe was well hidden behind honeysuckle which isn’t a problem in itself but a bit of warning from Sykes would have been appreciated. A curtain rail had fallen down and was laying with the curtain in the window sill with no note of apology/explanation. There were very few instructions for the appliances/tv/windows/heating/wood burner. There was no welcome pack at all and only one bit of hand cleaner for three wash basins. All these are minor niggles and had negligible effect on our holiday and are easily corrected by the owner. But the deal breaker for us was the lack of a private garden area. It took a while to realise the extent of the garden again due to lack of information. The garden is lovely but is SHARED with the adjoining cottage. Please update your description Sykes. As dog owners we always try to ensure we have a private garden (not necessarily fenced). The only part of the garden which would be private has chains preventing you entering and danger signs. Also the bridge across the brook to the woods was fenced off.

Sorry to here you we not happy with every aspect of the cottage. The front porch does need some work and the curtain has come down I have been informed. There is a wooden shutter that can be used. There is an acre of available garden at the back and front of the garden. This is private as the other cottage is currently empty. Property Owner

“A really quiet location, we booked the Lodge as our Little dog struggles with the Firework season, she was very comfortable as we heard very little, it took about a day for her to get used to the sound of the "full" stream rushing by.”

The kitchen has everything you need and the other rooms are very comfortable.

“We loved it - only thing would be the quality and size of towels.”

Also if you provide hand soaps at every sink surely you would want to provide a hand towel in the cloak room ? I had to use a hand towel from our bedroom. Wasn’t possible to have more than two baths the whole week but shower was good. There were also two chipped mugs. These did not distract from what is a lovely cottage.

The attractive old market town of Sedbergh (pronounced Sed-Ber), with its old-world atmosphere, is not only set in the magnificent western dales of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but is also close to the rugged eastern fells of the Lake District. The town, with its narrow streets, little shops, traditional pubs, famous school dating back to 1525 and its 12th century church, has been a thriving community for hundreds of years, with a market dating from the 13th Century. Leading from Sedbergh is Dentdale, the jewel of the Yorkshire Dales with its rolling hills and dry-stone walls, stretching 14 miles from the windswept moors below Whernside to the confluence of the Rivers Dee and Rawthey.
