The property

Keswick 2 miles. Situated in the dramatic splendour of the beautiful Lake District National Park is Norton, a lovely reverse-level, stone cottage that combines traditional craftmanship and character with every modern comfort. The cottage rests in Applethwaite, Cumbria on the lower south facing slopes of Skiddaw, one of the Lakes best known peaks, and boasts unbeatable views of Borrowdale over Derwentwater. It is named after one of the mountaineers on George Mallory’s unsuccessful 1924 Everest expedition. The main house in the grounds was then owned by the expedition’s doctor and the ascent was partly planned there. On arrival at the cottage, a designated parking space welcomes you to the steps and path that lead to the first floor entrance. Take advantage of the sitting room with a warming woodburning stove to toast your toes and a Smart TV to keep you entertained. The chef of the group will be delighted to discover a well-equipped kitchen/diner with an induction hob, electric oven and a handy dishwasher. Gather to enjoy your evening meal looking out at the views through the glass juliet balcony. As the evening draws to a close, make your way downstairs for some well-earned rest; both of the stylish bedrooms have super-king-size beds. One also has an en-suite bathroom while the other, in which the bed has a zip/link feature, is adjacent to a ground-floor washroom with toilet and walk in shower. The entrance lobby has plenty of coat hooks and a boot rack for walkers together with its own upstairs cloakroom. Completing the interior is a handy utility with spacious fridge-freezer and a washer-dryer. Outside, you will not be able to tear yourself away from the delightful garden, boasting yet more amazing views of this stunning area, along with furniture so you can take your dining alfresco and shared access to the two-acre grounds. Nearby is the 17th century country pub, The Pheasant Inn, offering delicious pub grub and a friendly atmosphere, why not treat your loved ones to a meal out one evening? Head into the thriving town of Keswick and discover the history of the area at Keswick Museum or venture over to Derwentwater for a serene cruise on the lake or to unleash your adventurous side with some water sports. In this paradise for outdoor activity there are are endless walking options ranging from easy to challenging in and around the surrounding mountains. If you fancy a more relaxing stroll, Hope Park in Keswick or the attractive new cycle path along the river Greta provide a peaceful setting for a tranquil day. Give yourself a truly unique experience and visit The Puzzling Place, home to mind-bending exhibitions. Just a scenic drive away within the picture-perfect Lake District are the lively towns of Ambleside and Windermere where you can fuel your excursions with lunch at one of many pubs, restaurants and cafés. If you are feeling particularly energetic, the summit of Scafell Pike can be reached as a day trip or forget your car and just enjoy the abundance of walking and cycling routes from the doorstep of the cottage, including on or around Skiddaw, Blencathra or Latrigg. The idylic village of Applethwaite is at the foot of the south facing slope of Skiddaw in a peaceful location yet only 2 miles from the convenience of neighbouring Keswick. Applethwaite has fascinating history, in the late eighteenth century woollen goods were produced in the area and the remains of old corn mills can still be found today. Also, William Wordsworth once owned a property in Applethwaite. Applethwaite is often used as a start-point for a walk up Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake is also nearby where it is known for osprey to nest.
