Peter is a trustee of the Kelsick Educational Foundation, based in Ambleside, a charitable organisation (founded in 1723) that provides financial grants for local groups and schools as well as local individuals aged under 25. The board of twelve voluntary trustees meet regularly, our work consisting of property administration and maintenance, grant allocation and the general management of the Trust. The trustees are selected for their expertise in fields related to these tasks. Peter has been a trustee for more than 20 years and currently serves as Vice Chairman and Chairman of Finance.
Peter served as a Trustee of The Brathay Trust for five years. The Brathay Trust works with vulnerable and disadvantaged children to help them develop the skills, confidence and motivation to make positive choices in their lives. Both Peter and I were significant sponsors of the three day ‘Festival of Wellbeing’, organised by University of Cumbria and the Brathay Trust in July 2015, sponsoring the musical and entertainment elements of the event.
For a number of years, Heart of the Lakes has been one of the main sponsors of the ‘Great Langdale Marathon’. We contribute a week’s stay in one of our cottages worth more than £500 to the winner of the race. The Race follows what is recognized as one of the most scenic and also the most challenging marathon routes in Britain taking in the head of the Langdale Valley, Little Langdale, round to Skelwith Fold and Skelwith Bridge returning to the Langdale finishing point via High Close (the full marathon takes up two laps of this challenging course whilst the half marathon goes round one lap).
Run in conjunction with university of Cumbria this three day festival attracted international delegates and speakers with a variety of workshops, high quality speakers and social activities. We were delighted to be involved by sponsoring all P. A. systems together with the live music and entertainment during the three days – this included a Caleigh on the last night as well as an incredibly popular drumming workshop held in a yurt on the Brathay campus.
We have recently become involved with sponsorship of the Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling at the world famous Grasmere sports and look forward to continuing with this in the years to come.
We are currently supporting a young local musician with dedicated free practice space in our office building. This has led to a co-operation with the Brathay Hall Trust to put on a ‘Gig’ at Brathay Hall with all moneys raised being donated to the Brathay Hall Charitable Trust
Sue previously served as a school governor for five years with responsibility for special needs.
We donate prizes annually to the Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling at this delightful country fair.
Sue served as secretary and subsequently as chairman with Ambleside chamber of trade.
