Get ready to enjoy bangs, whizzes and sparkling explosions across the night sky as people across the UK light bonfires and let off fireworks.
Remember, remember the 5th of November. This is Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, which is the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot (1650) a failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament by a group of dissidents.
Gunpowder, treason and plot. Did you know that up until 1859 it was compulsory for residents in England to celebrate this day? Nowadays it’s a family friendly evening with organisations putting on spectacular firework displays to delight and entertain, these often take place on the nearest weekend to the 5th rather than on the night itself.
If you’d like to soak up the atmosphere of a big firework display in the Lake District head Kendal for Skies Alight - Fireworks Extravaganza at Kendal Rugby Club, a free event which starts at 5pm on Friday 2 November there will be a licensed bar, hot food and kids rides, this year Hayes Garden Centre in Ambleside is holding a Fireworks Night & Late-night Shopping event 6 - 9pm on Friday 2 November, this is a ticketed event, booking essential.
Another great way to experience the wonder of fireworks sparkling across the skies is to take a flask of warm tea, coffee or perhaps mulled wine and head somewhere high up overlooking a town, then watch as fireworks pepper the sky from the homes and gardens below. On a clear night you’ll also get to enjoy the stars. Or depending on the location of your Heart of the Lakes cottage you might be able to enjoy firesworks from the cosy warmth of indoors, through a well positioned window or skylight!
