The Lake District is an up and coming live music destination thanks to the success of the Kendal Calling festival, now based at Lowther Castle. With the main stage in recent years boasting Manic Street Preachers and Noel Gallagher just to name a couple, it’s getting bigger and better every time. The next Kendal Calling festival will be held from the 25th-29th of July, 2019.
Offering a completely different kind of music festival experience is Lake District Summer Music is an international arts festival based in the Southern Lake District with chamber music at its heart. It takes place in August each year across a number different locations.
The Brewery Arts Centre programmes touring international and UK bands, and nearby, on the road between Kendal and Windermere, the Hawkshead Brewery in Staveley hosts regular Sunday Sessions and one of gigs all year round. For those who enjoy more intimate surroundings, there are plenty of pubs offering live music. Cumbria’s best-known music bar is Bootleggers in Kendal, featuring live music up to four nights a week, local talent and well-established names you will have heard of from across the UK and the world all perform on the bar’s purpose-built stage.
Ambleside’s Lily and Ambleside Tavern feature live music, while in Keswick, The Packhorse, Oddfellows Arms and Lake Road Inn are worth a look. In Bowness, The Angel Inn, Churchills and the New Hall Inn all offer live music too. In Coniston, be sure to check out the Sun Hotel. For those staying in the Ullswater are, the Inn On The Lake at Glenridding regularly hosts live music, while in Grasmere, visitors should drop in at the Royal Oak. For jazz the go to places are Zeffirelli’s and the annual four day Keswick Jazz Festival, usually in May.
