One of the highlights of a visit to the Lake District is the spectacular view as you head down the Langdale Valley towards The Langdale Pikes with all the promises of fine walking amidst some of England's finest scenery. Loved by walkers and climbers over the years this magnificent setting could be the venue for a fine holiday right in the heart of the National Park.
The two villages in the valley, Elterwater and Chapel Stile, nestle amid the fells...Elterwater is home to the famous Britannia Inn whilst Chapel Stile has a well-stocked village shop, tea shop and Wainwright's country pub.
The valley abounds in fine walking. Paths from the head of Great Langdale take you to the great ascent of Rossett Ghyll, reputed to be the steepest path in the Lake District, and from there you can get onto the highest tops including Scafell Pike and Scafell. Other paths from the valley would lead you up The Band onto Bowfell or to the Crinkle Crags and Pike o'Blisco, whilst The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is a great place to refresh yourself at the end of a full day in the hills.
Further down the valley you can climb from The New Dungeon Ghyll up to the beautiful Stickle Tarn and then onto the Langdale Pikes themselves with Harrison Stickle being the highest. The most adventurous may also tackle the traverse of Pavey Ark.
A winding country lane leads from the head of the valley over the top to Little Langdale with a pause on the way to enjoy Blea Tarn. There are walks around the tarn and beautiful views to be enjoyed.
Don't miss stopping off at Skelwith Bridge as you head back down the valley. The famous Chesters café and shop is open every day and popular with walkers or just those wishing to enjoy the beauty spot by the River Brathay. Skelwith Force is spectacular as the waters power their way through the narrow cutting in the rocks. A fine arched bridge links here with the Cumbria Way and river bank walks to Elterwater and paths to Little Langdale.
Just a short walk or drive from anywhere in Langdale will take you to some of the most stunning viewpoints you'll find anywhere in the world. This wonderful rural area, just a few short miles from Ambleside, offers everything you could want to make your next holiday to the Lake District truly memorable.
