A Dog Friendly Cottage Break

Also with Lakelovers, bringing your whole family on holiday doesn’t mean missing out on your dream getaway. We have dog friendly properties to suit all budgets and desires.

Lakelovers’ dog friendly Ambleside cottages are hand-picked by our pet-loving and experienced property team. We offer high quality accommodation as well as top ‘pawfect’ holiday locations. A cottage break means that you can avoid the hassle of worrying about noise for early morning walkies, socialising with other dogs or what to do with Rover during meal times.

Plus, you’ll find pooch-perfect comforting features such as log burners, open fires and even underfloor heating! Mud rooms and well-equipped laundry facilities makes a holiday away with pooch easy too. Secure gardens with lawns and patio access are also a firm favourite.

Ambleside is a very dog friendly town in the Lake District, with a large range of dog friendly shops, cafes and pubs. In fact, the pavements are dotted with dog bowls outside shops and pubs. Some even have dog treats as dog owners happily shop.

Ambleside sits at the head of Lake Windermere. Its central location makes it an important destination for visitors. We’d recommend exploring the wonderful side streets. They offer a quieter way to explore the treasures on offer in Ambleside.

For a car-free holiday, you’ll be pleased to hear that dogs are welcome guests with Ambleside attractions such as Windermere Lake Cruises. Using the local lake cruise attraction means you can explore dog friendly attractions like Brockhole on Windermere, Wray Castle Estate and the walks along the western shore, as well as Bowness and Windermere. Dogs are also welcome with Coniston Launch, Ullswater Steamers and on Derwentwater.

A Dog Friendly Ambleside Holiday

Walking is the most popular activity in Ambleside. This makes it a perfect choice for owners looking for a relaxing dog friendly holiday.

Do you have an energetic pet, such as bouncy Labrador Retriever or a lively Springer Spaniel? Tire them out with a full day of hiking. For dog owners visiting Ambleside for some challenging walking, England’s highest mountain walk Scafell is a must. Tackle this well-trodden route, and enjoy a well-deserved local beer and dog treat in one of Langdale’s dog friendly pubs.

Beer gardens are a peaceful resting place for pets and their owners alike and feature in many Ambleside pubs. Ambleside dog friendly pubs to enjoy straight from your cottage door include the Wateredge Inn. It has one of the very best lakeside beer gardens in the area. Tucked off the main road is Golden Rule – also dog friendly and offers hearty pub grub, open fires and great beer. The central Royal Oak is another popular resting place for visitors with dogs, for a coffee, Sunday lunch or cask ale.

Or, is your pooch a little less sociable and enjoys freedom and space away from people and other dogs? Ambleside puts you in the heart of the Lake District, with the A591 taking you in either direction to explore the south and north lakes. And Langdale, Coniston Water and Hawkshead are less than a 30-minute drive, so it is easy to escape the crowds when choosing Ambleside as your base.

Dog Walks

For local Ambleside dog walks, the wander through Skelghyll Wood to Stock Ghyll Force is a daily pleasure for many dog walkers visiting Ambleside. Pop in to our Ambleside Gold office along the way, as we always welcome visits from our four-legged guests. For pooches that enjoy a long dog walk, head over Wansfell to drop into the conservation valley of Troutbeck.

This circular route is a good 4 to 5-hour walk so plan a stop at one of the two superb dog friendly pubs in Troutbeck for a hearty re-fuel. Loughrigg fell can be walked from Ambleside and you can take in Rydal and Grasmere from Ambleside on foot and paws.

Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater is another popular local walk, with Chesters by the River cafe a draw for many dog owners.

Going on holiday with pets can be stressful. But a cottage break in the Lake District with dogs isn’t. Your holiday cottage is a private home-from-home. Without the fuss and noise of other people and pets and Ambleside is a great choice for a dog friendly cottage holiday.
