“Property cosy, comfortable, great location, but would not recommend parking car outside as the road is narrow,and not much room for passing, much better to park in either the two places listed in information pack, but did not use car much as great bus services.”

“Lovely cottage to stay in with a bit of a suntrap on the front bench.”

Freezer compartment very tiny. It would be nice to have cooking oil in the cottage and whatever previous people had left (as long as it is not perishable). A spare loo roll would also be good.

Glad you enjoyed the front bench, especially in the sun! Re your other comments: unfortunately there isn't room for a separate freezer, but we're looking to replace the current fridge shortly and will see if we can find one with a larger freezer compartment. Heart of the Lakes' policy is to clear away spare food (apart from salt and pepper) and to leave one full loo roll Property Owner

“This is a lovely cottage to stay in, very comfortable and homely.”

The location is great, 5 minutes in one direction to Ambleside centre and 10 minutes the other way you are at the lakeside. I would recommend anyone to chose this accommodation and would definitely stay there again!

“We had a lovely stay at Friends Cottage!”

Fantastic, quaint little cottage ideal for a stay in Ambleside. Ideal location for the village and walks from the doorstep. Log burner was a great touch. Communications with the hosts was lacking during the stay, toaster not working and unable to resolve. Central heating was hard to control. But overall would stay here again!

Really glad you enjoyed the cottage. [NB For future guests: The heating's controlled by a Honeywell thermostat, next to the TV. It's similar to a Hive, ie there's a touchpad for you to switch the heating on or off, or set it to your preferred schedule. “The cottage was perfect.”

It had all the facilities we needed for a walking holiday, was very cosy and in an excellent location in Ambleside. Contrary to a comment I had read before the stay, there is a parking space available that is blocked out clearly by traffic cones. Bedrooms were comfortable and the kitchen was very well equipped. Would definitely recommend this cottage to friends and will look to stay here again if we return to the Lakes!

Thanks for your comment about the parking. Other guests have been happy to park in front of the cottage (we have two 'reserved parking' signs and two traffic cones to help reserve this space), and the property listing explains that this is the roadside - ie not a private drive. The property listing already explains that the terrace to the rear is shared. Property Owner

“We had a lovely stay at Friends Cottage.”

It was clean and cosy, and a great location. We did find the mattresses very soft, and as such the bed sheets slid off every night. Firmer mattresses would be be ideal, or a fitted sheet to keep it in place. The key safe was also tricky to close and would benefit from an upgrade. Otherwise, would highly recommend. Thank you

Response from owner: Many thanks for your feedback about the bedding. This is supplied by a separate linen company and I'm afraid that fitted undersheets aren't an option. However, Heart of the Lakes have kindly offered to fit a kingsize undersheet on the double bed (and a double-size undersheet on the single bed), so these are more secure. “The cottage was very nice - a few problems with the WiFi which was patchy in the back bedroom which was unfortunately where the main user of internet- teenage daughter - was sleeping.”

The mattress on the double bed was very soft so we didn’t sleep that well. We ended up parking in the public car park down the hill and paying for the weeks parking. That meant we were a little put out when guests at the next door cottage parked in front of our cottage so our view was of their car and made it difficult getting out of the gate. Apart from that a very nice cottage with lovely facilities and a great location. It was particularly nice to be able to walk from the front door without driving. We would come again.

Sitting in a quiet location less than 5 minutes’ walk from the centre of Ambleside, this cosy 18th century cottage has bags of character and a glimpse of Lake Windermere from the double bedroom. Friend’s Cottage makes a perfect base from which to explore - with walks from the doorstep to Wansfell, Fairfield Horseshoe and Jenkin's Crag. Followed by relaxing evenings snuggled up in front of the wood-burning stove. Accommodation: Sitting room with wood-burning stove, dining table and TV. Separate study area. Kitchen with electric oven, hob and washing machine. Enclosed rear porch with access to outside terrace. Windermere 4 miles; Grasmere 4 mile; Keswick 15 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
