Kevin “This was our third time of staying at Longsyke cottage in Grasmere.”
We love this place, it really is our go to property when staying in the Lakes.
- Kevin, May 2022Linda “We have loved staying in this cottage.”
This was our second visit, my son & daughter in law have also had holidays in here previously. The location is ideal for us, the off road parking a plus point too. Ideal for a couple with a dog looking for a home from home while on holiday. We are extremely sorry that this property is no longer available for holiday let's.
- Linda, March 2022D “Was very concerned about our forthcoming stay at this property because of a number of bad reviews.”
I emailed Sykes Holiday Cottages to register my concern & received an email back to say they would contact the local HOTL office and make them aware of the email. But were confident that, after the feedback, that the cleanliness issues would be resolved. On arrival, in the bathroom, we found a dirty towel & a bathmat which was wet through. We also couldn't locate a password for the wifi. Having stayed at other self catering properties, there is normally a folder with details of bin collections, appliance instructions , heating instructions, wifi password etc etc. We eventually found the password attached to an ornament behind a curtain. The smell in the main bedroom is worrying. There was a diffuser which we removed, as we find them overpowering but soon put it back as there was a horrible fishy smell. The second bedroom has a musty smell but it is an old cottage & we knew from previous reviews that this was a issue. Also the throws in both bedrooms were filthy. And the settee's in the lounge were grubby looking & most uncomfortable. However, I do believe that feedback is being listened to as the TV has been upgraded & the carpets appeared clean. The kitchen was quite well equipped. Although this feedback appears all negative, the positives of this cottage is the location, good off road parking & a modern bathroom(although here, the small window is mouldy as there is not enough ventilation ) With some upgrading, this cottage could be a little gem.
- D, September 2021Stephen “Expected the cottage to be cleaner and had to clean all the rooms ourselves.”
The cottage needs refreshing and upgrading.
- Stephen, August 2021Fiona “The good things about this is the location and it is beautifully decorated.”
Living room is great but TV bit dated/small and complicated .Bathroom and main bed room are good.Small bedroom fine but smells mouldy/musty. No instructions re recycling rubbish/no tin opener! Description is misleading.I expected small cottage but your description said fridge/freezer and patio dining both of which are a stretch of the imagination Ice compartment in fridge and if had patio dining (if table would have to move car) Don’t think you should describe use of same space for 2 different things Dishwasher not usable unless take own powder (had dishwasher tablets which it tells you not to use) Some noise from upstairs Cleanliness generally poor ,dusty window sills, crumbs on toaster and bin.Just about acceptable pre Covid but not post Covid No attempt to remove cushions, games, books, leaflets ; no sense of Covid secure. Heart of Lakes response to 2 emails and 1 phone call also inadequate. They say can’t compel owners to be Covid secure and if that is the case they should indicate which owners are complying so you can decide. They did offer to send cleaner round again but I had already cleaned surfaces etc.Didn’t even leave basic cleaning spray out but found some in cupboard under stairs This is 3rd cottage I have been in during school hols this year all in popular tourist destinations. This was middle in price range for smaller property.Other 2 were detached for 4 people with big garden and much more Covid secure. I would be embarrassed to charge £1000 per week for this property and certainly don’t think it is value for money. I have been booking holiday cottages for 20 years and never complained but not impressed with cottage or Heart of Lakes response so far….but only been home a day so they may surprise me yet
- Fiona, August 2021Elsie “On the service the accommodation looked clean mugs in cupboard badly stained, baking trays passed their best and need replacing.”
Dust in corners and sides of drawers in dressing table. We lined them with our tissue paper. TV not connected up properly, took ages to get it working. No instructions available. The old mags should be discarded, refer to Covid deep clean instructions. Patio needs to be swept.
- Elsie, June 2021John “A bit noisy in morning from persons in flat above”
- John, June 2021C “We would like to complain about our stay at Longsyke in Grasmere starting from the 22nd May till 5th June.”
After a long journey from Somerset we entered the cottage and just wanted to have a cuppa and relax. Imagine our surprise when we found the kitchen dirty, finger-marks on cupboards, crumbs on one of the glass protectors and what can only be described as gunge under another, as we were told from HOTL staff prior to our stay, that due to covid the cottages are all scrupulously cleaned. This was not the case with this cottage, we felt like just leaving and going back home. As my partner has health problems we have to make sure everything is clean, and had she not been feeling well we decided to stay. The kitchen was then thoroughly cleaned and then we set about cleaning the cups, plates and cutlery that we would use throughout our stay. As we found, lots of the plates, cups etc. also had chips in them, for what we paid we find it unacceptable. Another find was the grill tray in the oven was also dirty as was a baking dish, they both had residues from being used, pictures of these were taken. There were numerous spiders webs in the place, and I know that spiders can't build the webs we found that quick. We also decided to use the vacuum cleaner and to our surprise found it took lots of dog hairs that were stuck on the carpet. Midway through the first week we used the washing machine and found the powder drawer absolutely filthy, once again we had to clean it before use. On the Friday of the first week my partner was looking in one of the cupboards and found a bread bin, when she got it out and opened it she found what was once some bread, although now it had turned into a mouldy hairy mess. My partner put it back into the cupboard but not before I took a picture of it, I will attach picture of what we found to this email. As I was out on the fells on the Saturday, my partner was walking our dog and as she was coming back to the cottage she noticed a car pull up outside and a woman with two young children got out. They went to the front door and were about to enter when she looked across and saw my partner looking at her, she stopped and asked whether she was staying there to which my partner replied yes. She said she was the cleaner and usually comes in on a Saturday to clean. My partner then told her about the things we found and the state of the place and she replied "I'm only the cleaner!" she then asked if we needed her to clean but my partner told her we had already done it and not to bother. What worried us was that we were there for two weeks and hadn't requested anyone to come. Also as some of our belongings were lying around how could she have cleaned the place with two young children with her, if she was cleaning then what would the children be doing?. On the following Tuesday we called into the Keswick branch of HOTL and spoke with a Lady called Mary who noted our concerns and said she would pass it on and also told us to email/write when we could.
- C, May 2021Gill “Before I could put any of my things in kitchen cupboards I had to clean inside every cupboard not very covid friendly we could not get heating to work had to ring office who did send a engineer out who in formed us that storage heaters should have been left on again having to have someone in appartment was not covid friendly we had to reprogram tv no towels had to pay for wifi then thurs a man arrived to put a new fence up and asked why we had not moved our car apparently we supposed to have been informed so all in all we were not Impressed.”
- Gill, May 2021Feel free to make any changes/ adjustments and I will pop these in for you. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback following your stay at Longsyke. We can only apologise that our cleaning fell short on this occasion, had we been made aware of this shortfall upon your arrival we would have sought to rectify these points straight away for you, however, appreciate that you may not wish to have been disturbed. It is with regret that the night storage heaters were not working effectively on your arrival however we are pleased one of our maintenance engineers were able to swiftly resolve this for you. Wi-Fi is provided in the cottage with the log in details and password, there is no charge to connect to this particular network. There was a large supply of towels left in the airing cupboard for your arrival . We would like to pass on our apologies on behalf of the neighboring property who needed to carry our repair work on his fence, unfortunately we were not aware that this would cause disruption to yourselves, had we known of this work prior to your arrival we would of a matter of courtesy contacted you beforehand. We do hope that despite these issues you had a lovely time exploring the Lake District and wish to welcome you back to the Lakes in the near future. Property Owner
