    “This is third time we’ve stayed in Le Tholonet and it was as fabulous as ever.”

    The house and gardens are perfect but the cleanliness let it down slightly this time. I had to wash the toothbrush cup/holder as it was full of toothpaste before we could use it. There was also a child’s toy car and a pair of slippers under the edge of the table in the main sitting room. The waste bin in kitchen could also do with a clean and there were crumbs on the worktops. However I would still return as we love it.

The property

An excellent detached split level house (c1965) with a quiet air of comfort in a beautiful rural setting just outside the village of Grasmere. Le Tholonet has a delightful light and sunny feel with large windows, which make the most of the beautiful location and panoramic southerly views. Amongst the walks direct from the door are Helm Crag, and the Easedale valleys, Fairfield, Helvellyn and over Silver Howe to Elterwater and the Langdales. The house is named after the village in Provence where the original owner, herself a local artist, spent many a happy time. Accommodation: Entrance hall. Delightful L-shaped sitting/dining room with exceptional views across the valley (TV, DVD, video, hi-fi, electric fire and free wi-fi). Patio doors open on to very spacious balcony with table and chairs. Well planned breakfast kitchen with fine views. Stairs from the entrance hall down to the cosy 'folk art' sitting room (TV, DVD) with dual aspect views up and across the valley. Utility/laundry room with sink and wc. Stairs from the hall lead to a half landing. Well appointed, cosy twin bedroom. Bathroom accessed either from this room or from the landing (bath with shower over, basin and wc). Stairs to master bedroom en-suite (bath with shower over, basin and wc). Formerly the owner's studio, with a pitched roof and large windows - this room makes the most of the setting. Smaller double bedroom with its own washbasin. All the bedrooms have fine views to the gardens or the countryside beyond. Furnishings throughout offer a high degree of comfort with personal touches aided by the inclusion of a number of pieces hand painted by the owner, as well as paintings by the original owner. Fitted carpets throughout. Gas fired central heating. Outside: Large garden with lawns and lovely specimen shrubs with seasonal colour. Unimpeded glorious views across the valley from the garden and balcony. Picnic bench and garden seat with table inset. Private parking for three cars in drive. Grasmere centre half a mile. Note: Sorry no children under 10 years.

GRASMERE

Ambleside 5 miles; Windermere 9 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.
