“This is an excellent apartment in a characterful well-maintained property.”

It is well equipped, nicely designed and comfortable. Every window offers a view. Lovely grounds, you can walk from the door up Loughrigg Fell. No real criticisms. The 40 steps mean that it's not suited to any anyone with significant mobility issues. The toaster tripped the switches every time we tried to use it!

The property

This luxury apartment is a great place to stay as well as providing a superb base from which to explore and enjoy Ambleside and the Lake District. The Lookout has been tastefully and extensively refurbished, and free Wi-fi access is also now available. It is one of just ten apartments, converted from a magnificent 19th century vicarage, set in a unique and tranquil hillside location - it is reached by a long drive, with security gates at the main entrance and parking available next to the house - it is hard to imagine a more impressive setting. The village of Ambleside (10 minutes walk away), nearby hills such as Wansfell Pike and The Fairfield Horseshoe as well as Rydal and Grasmere can all be reached on foot without the need to get back into a car - a lovely feeling! Accommodation: The building is accessed by a security code, and the apartment itself, on the second floor, is reached via the impressively grand staircase. The entrance hall leads through to the light and airy sitting/dining room. The first thing you'll notice is the stunning and unique view of the Fairfield Horseshoe from the window. Changing through the seasons, it invites you to just sit and look. The room has been completely refurnished and includes a large flat screen TV, DVD player, free Wi-fi broadband, music system with a CD player and iPod docking station, and dining table and chairs. The well-equipped kitchen with cream units and granite work surfaces leads off from the sitting room and has everything you could wish for. Two bedrooms: one has a king-size bed and newly fitted ensuite bathroom and wc. The other has twin beds and a washbasin, with newly fitted ensuite shower room and wc. In addition, there is a third cloakroom with wash basin and wc off the hallway. Outside: The property lies in ten acres of beautiful wooded grounds with garden benches to take in the views. Parking for two cars. Shared hard tennis court. Ambleside village has a great selection of restaurants, pubs and cafes, fine individual shops and a cinema within easy walking distance 10 minutes walk downhill.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
