  • “It would appear that many of the problems from previous reviews have now been addressed.”

The cottage was clean, light, warm and comfortable . The beds were very comfortable.Children were well catered for with a well-stocked the room at the back of the cottage and night lights in two of the bedrooms. However the fan in the windowless ensuite did not operate nor did one of the bedroom radiators. I think one of the parking permits has gone missing. A very enjoyable stay. It's a pity that the residents next door decided to have an all-night party the night before we left!

The property

Rose Cottage is a charming and deceptively spacious double-fronted character cottage just outside Ambleside in a little access only lane just off the main road in a short terrace. Those of you who know the area will enjoy the location for its position at the entrance to the Langdale Valley and its fine mountain walking and beautiful scenery. The path to Loughrigg Fell lies at the back of the cottage and all the beauty spots of the central Lake District are within easy driving distance. There are some excellent pubs and restaurants in the vicinity for those who want to eat out. There is river fishing on the Brathay just across the road and the head of Lake Windermere is close by. Accommodation: The central entrance hall has the dining room to one side which in turn leads through to the kitchen and 'snug' - a second smaller sitting room with TV/DVD, selection of DVDs and games as well as wireless broadband access available free of charge. The cosy main sitting room is to the left of the front door (open fire, TV with Freeview , DVD, sound system with iPod connection) and looks out towards Wansfell. A pretty curved staircase leads from the hallway to the central landing. The master double bedroom has an en-suite shower room (shower, basin and wc). There are two further bedrooms - a second double and a smaller room with a 4' wide bed offered as a single. The bathroom has a bath with shower over, basin and wc. Character features have been carefully retained including the Victorian fireplaces, some flagged floors, window shutters and stripped pine doors. Gas central heating and hot water keep you cosy in any season and the kitchen and bathrooms have underfloor heating. Note: Can sleep 5 on request Outside: Views to Lake Windermere from small private front terrace with seating for four persons. Lockable boot/drying room just outside the back door, equipped with coin-operated tumble dryer and fan heater, with enough space for at least two bicycles. Space outside the cottage for unloading. Private parking for two cars about 100 yards away. Ambleside village approx 1 mile.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Windermere 4 miles; Grasmere 4 mile; Keswick 15 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
