    “A lovely well equipped cottage.”

Super comfy bed. Good parking. It was very cold when we arrived and it took some time to fathom out how to get the heating on but we managed with the help of the management staff. A thermostat on the wall would be so much easier than pushing buttons on the boiler or maybe a card with simple instructions?

Thank you so much for your kind comments and your suggestion of a simple instruction card on the boiler, that's a great idea which we will sort when we're next there. Glad you had a good time. Property Owner

The property

Courtyard Cottage is set at Clappersgate just on the outskirts of Ambleside, at the entrance to a delightful courtyard of character properties formerly the stables and grooms' cottages for The Croft and an ideal location from which to explore the Lake District. Cruises on Lake Windermere start within walking distance at Waterhead from where you can sail down England's largest lake to Bowness and Lakeside. There are walks from the door to be enjoyed including the climb up Todd Crag from where you will be rewarded with some of the finest views around. Wansfell, Loughrigg and even Fairfield are to hand as are the low level walks 'under Loughrigg' to Rydal, or by country lanes to Skelwith Fold or Loughrigg Tarn. Accommodation: Entrance from the rear south facing patio into the dining/kitchen and then up a step through an archway into the main living room. This spacious area has a feature cast iron log burning stove with the chimney pipe going right up to the top of the beamed double height room (TV, DVD, CD/radio, free wi-fi). The large window at one end adds to the feeling of space and light. Window, exposed roof timbers and gallery are a real feature. The double bedded room (5' bed) is through a small inner hall off the lounge and there is a modern bathroom with large shower, basin and wc. Stairs from the sitting room lead to a galleried sleeping area which offers two single beds under the eaves - some restricted head room. The cottage is comfortable with lots of personal touches to make you feel really at home including original water-colour paintings and prints by the artist owner. Fitted carpets. Outside: The neat enclosed patio area offers a good degree of privacy and being south facing is ideal for outdoor eating - patio table and chairs provided. Visitors to the courtyard also have shared use of a pretty riverside garden alongside the river Brathay, which is accessed across the road. Private parking for two cars. Shops, pubs etc in Ambleside village, 1 mile.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

Note: Logs for fire can be purchased locally.
