“A lovely cottage and in a perfect location; just outside the main town but just a 5 minute walk to all the shops and restaurants etc.”

Everything you could possibly think of or require for cooking is provided in the kitchen, although we only ate breakfast. And when the evenings got chilly the almost instant heating quickly made the cottage warm and cosy. Our only complaint is the mattresses in the bedrooms could do with being replaced as they are about past their best. Not that it stopped us sleeping after enjoying the hikes and walks around the area. Highly recommend this cottage for a stay In Ambleside.

The property

Tucked away on the iconic Struggle, connecting Kirkstone and Ambleside. Within the sought-after Lake District National Park, rests this charming, white-washed holiday home, Hilber Cottage. Idyllically positioned in a semi-rural setting and framing scenic views across the surrounding countryside to Loughrigg, Hilber Cottage makes for a lovely base for both families and friends looking to explore this picturesque region. Park up in the spaces provided at the foot of this lovely dwelling before unloading your belongings and making your way inside, kicking off your muddy boots and hanging your walking gear in the convenient hallway space upon entry. Stepping through, be welcomed into the snug sitting room, framing far-reaching views to Loughrigg Fell and featuring a warming woodburning stove, providing a homely setting to unwind in front of the television with a steaming cup of tea following a day full of adventure. The designated chef will be delighted by the fully-equipped kitchen/diner tucked away at the rear of the property, well-presented with a traditional yet contemporary décor and housing all of the essential amenities; gather your guests together at the dining table to indulge in the fruits of your labour as you plan the following days itinerary. Carry the conversation outdoors and soak in the last of the evening sun with a sociable seat on the patio, enveloped by the peaceful setting of the surrounding countryside; a lovely spot to watch the sunset over the horizon with a crisp glass of wine. As the evening grows darker, head back indoors and climb the stairs to the first floor to prepare for bed in the family bathroom, fit with both a bath and an overhead shower, so you can choose between soaking your muscles amongst the bubbles in the tub, or washing away the day with a quick rinse. Retire for the evening to one of the three well-presented bedrooms, with the choice between a sumptuous king-size, a twin and a bunk room, suitable for adults and children. Take a break from doing the cooking and take the short stroll into the centre of Ambleside where you'll be spoilt for choice with the array of eateries on offer; treat your significant other to a spot of fine dining at Lake Road Kitchen or opt for a bite of pub grub within a quintessentially English setting at The Ambleside Inn, before ending the evening with a refreshing pint of cask ale and a spot of live music at The Lily Bar. Whilst you're in the area, be sure to visit the Armitt Library & Museum Centre to discover the cultural heritage of the area, or for a spot of sightseeing, discover the magnificent waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force as it cascades 70ft through the nearby woodland. Situated within the picturesque landscape of the Lake District National Park, you're in an outdoor adventurer’s paradise, with a plethora of walking, hiking and cycling trails available from your doorstep. Be sure to pack your bike and take on the challenging ascent to the top of The Struggle, a trail soaring a staggering 446 meters above sea level beginning right outside your door or lace up your walking boots and take on the climb to the summit of Scafell Pike, the tallest mountain in the country, offering panoramic views towards the peaks of Snowdonia from the top. Within easy reach are the twin towns of Bowness and Windermere, home to the famed World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. Here you can try your hand at sailing and embark on a boat trip on the tranquil waters of Lake Windermere, try your hand at paddle boarding or kayaking with expert tuition at Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre, or get dressed to the nines and enjoy an evening exploring the pubs and bars that decorate the high-street. Make memories that will last a lifetime with a stay at Hilber Cottage.

About the location

AMBLESIDE

Grasmere 4.4 miles; Windermere 4.7 miles; Keswick 16.7 miles.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
