    “Beautiful interesting property.”

    In an excellent location. Very comfortable. Contacted by the owner that access was available from 14.00 vice 16.00 meant we got another walk in. So very chuffed with that.

The property

A most charming and characterful mid 17th century cottage right in the heart of Ambleside and formed from part of Kelsick Hall, which later became the premises of the oldest grocers' shop in England. The cottage retains all possible character features - exposed beams, oak lintels, stone walls and higgledy piggledy corners and there is a delightful little balcony off the sitting room giving a view out into the street in almost Tuscan style. The word 'Bakestone' is taken from the area where stones were gathered that could withstand the heat of the bakers' oven, and one fascinating feature of the cottage is the two decoratively restored bakers' ovens still in place in the entrance hall which were originally used for baking bread for Kelsick Hall. Accommodation: The cottage has two entrances and a most useful integral garage where you can park your car and unload within the ground floor of the property. Steps up into ground floor entrance hall. Most of the accommodation is at first floor level. Open style dining/kitchen leads down into the delightful sitting room with its fine cruck beams and exposed stone wall ( Smart 43" TV, DVD, speaker, radio, books and games). There are three bedrooms - a double (king-sized bed) with a tv in the bedroom, one single bedded room with vanity basin on the same level as the dining room and a further single with some limited head room reached up a stairway. Fitted bathroom (shower over bath, basin and wc). Laundry/drying area in the garage. The cottage is tastefully furnished in a contemporary cottage style with original paintings and prints, including an interesting pictorial history of the property. Mostly fitted carpets. Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.
