“Great cottage and enjoyed our stay.”

Minor improvements: Safety mat in en suite shower Facilities for separating recycling would be good Guests are meant to leave the wheelie bin out on Thursdays but it would be good if owner/cleaner could check this has been done so that there is at least some space in the wheelie bin for the new arrivals.

The property

Described by many of our guests as one of the best cottages they have stayed in and as a wonderfully relaxing place to return to after a day exploring the Lake District, Kent Cottage is a delightful and cosy Grade II listed property dating back to 1760. Full of character and recently refurbished it is an ideal base for walking and cycling the western valleys of the National Park. The small village of High Lorton is situated in Lorton Vale, described by the great fell walker, Alfred Wainwright, as one of the pleasantest of Lakeland Valleys, it is a particularly quiet, unspoilt, beautiful area. Fine walking can be enjoyed on the high fells around Buttermere and Crummock Water. England's only mountain forest, Whinlatter is close by with a superb visitor centre, mountain bike trails, osprey viewing and Go-Ape aerial adventure walkway. Keswick and Cockermouth with their many attractions are only a short distance away. The village has a good restaurant, pub and a small shop and the famous Kirkstile Inn, with its own micro-brewery, at Loweswater is close by. Accommodation: Central front door entrance leads into the sitting room (TV, DVD Wi-Fi and log burning stove)and separate dining room, both with original fireplaces. Small rear hallway accesses the newly fitted kitchen and separate utility laundry room with downstairs wc and basin. Inner door from just off the kitchen to the garage and door to back garden. The central staircase leads to the first floor where there are three good bedrooms - a spacious double with king-size bed, original fireplace and en-suite shower and basin, a twin room and a single. Family bathroom has bath with shower over, basin and wc. The property has been newly presented throughout - carefully chosen fabrics and furnishings and newly installed central heating with some stripped floors, others with fitted carpets. Character features have been retained including the spice cupboard and bread oven in the sitting room. The living rooms and bedrooms have views to the fells. Outside: The attractive rear garden has mature trees and shrubs and two places to sit out of doors. Parking in the garage and immediately in front. Safe bike storage in the garage. Short stroll to village shop and ten minute walk to the pub. Nearest supermarket in Cockermouth (Sainsbury's). Note: Sorry no cot or high chair.

Note: This property has a Good Housekeeping bond of £200.

About the location

COCKERMOUTH

Bassenthwaite Lake 7 miles; Keswick 13 miles.

The small country market town of Cockermouth is situated in the quiet north-western part of the Lake District, a largely undiscovered and unspoilt area, yet only 13 miles from Keswick. The town is famous as the birthplace of both William Wordsworth and Fletcher Christian (of Mutiny on the Bounty fame) and Wordsworth’s Georgian family home, on the main street, is now a popular visitor attraction, owned by the National Trust. Cockermouth offers a good variety of shops, pubs and places to eat, but (of course) the main attraction of the area is the beautiful scenery and excellent walking in the northern lakes – Bassenthwaite Lake, Ennerdale Water and Derwent Water.
