As part of our ongoing commitment to conservation and the environment, Heart of the Lakes is best known for our involvement in the innovative ‘Our Man at the Top’ scheme, an essential project in which we have been instrumental since 1995. The scheme funds a full-time member of The National Trust staff working with teams on the ‘Fix the Fells’ projects, helping to restore and improve the footpaths across the Lake District. When the initiative first launched back in 1995, we decided to create an ‘opt-out’ scheme – the very first of its kind in the UK – to encourage visitors booking through Heart of the Lakes to contribute £1 towards ‘Our Man at the Top’. This funded – amongst others – a footpath with disabled access on ‘Whitemoss Common’ in Rydal. So successful was the scheme, that in 2005, we increased the contribution to £2. To date, virtually nobody has ever knowingly ‘opted out’. Through the generosity of our guests and with matched funding from Heritage Lottery for ‘Fix the Fells’, as a company, Heart of the Lakes has raised more than £500,000 for this work. We are currently working with Sarah Anderson ‘Our Woman at the Top’ who leads her hard working team and is passionate about the wonderful Lake District – as we write this in spring 2017 they are carrying our footpath repair on Helvellyn – if you’re up that way you may meet her and find out more about this valuable work.
