As the Lake District’s food and drink scene has flourished, so have the many festivals that now celebrate it. Here we take a look at the region’s beer festival highlights for 2020.
For a small, locally focused and intimate experience, the Punch Bowl Beer Festival ticks all the boxes. Run by the local community, the Punch Bowl usually puts on this annual event in February, but 2020 dates are yet to be confirmed. Look forward to sampling around 20 local ales, in keeping with the small nature of the event that has a community feel, but offers a warm welcome to all and is free to attend.
For 13 years Hawkshead Brewery, oddly enough in Staveley, Kendal, and not Hawkshead, have been hosting free beer festivals twice a year. They are one of the most popular events for both locals and visitors on the Lake District events calendar. There is a spring and summer festival when the sun has usually got its hat on! Whilst the 2020 dates have not been confirmed yet, the spring festival is in late March and the summer festival is in late July.
Free to attend, the Kirkby Lonsdale Beer and Music Festival features a wide range of local beer and cider, plus an accompanying soundtrack provided by local musicians. In addition, Underley Park is a fantastic venue for the festival which also puts on lots of activities for children, food and craft stalls, so it really is fun for all the family.
This festival is set in one of the most scenic rugby club grounds in the UK, overlooking Derwentwater. Around £15 will buy you access to a bevy of beers and loads of live music, those wishing to attend are urged to purchase their tickets well in advance, such as the popularity of this excellent event.
Great food, entertainment and of course beer is what you can expect if you attend the Grasmere Guzzler Beer Festival in September 2020. The festival was first held in 2006 when just 100 people gathered to sample 8 ales. Now, this free festival is visited by hundreds of folk all eager to try the120 tipples Guzzler now boasts, listen to live music, and to fuel up at one of the many food stalls. Join us in 2020, to celebrate all that is great about the British beer and ale industry, in the heart of the lakes, one of the country’s most beautiful national parks.
If you’re not going to be here for one of the festivals, check out the Lake District’s Best Breweries that you can visit all year round.
