Our Lake District cottages are in some of the National Park’s most beautiful locations. Nestled in the networks of beautiful villages or tucked at the foot of mountains or water’s edge, with so much of the great outdoors right on your doorstep you may not even need to use your car!
Here we have provided details on alternative ways of getting around in the Lake District, whether you want to whiz around on two wheels or take a leisurely lake cruise across Coniston water.

Whether you want quiet roads and gentle trails or big off-road adventures Biketreks have the bikes, routes and knowledge to suit you. Ambleside has some excellent routes right on its doorstep from mountain biking to easy country lanes and something for all the family.
Bikes come in many types and sizes. Helmets, basic tools and maps are also available to hire.

Mountain Goat have a variety of guided tours that reach every corner of the Lake District.You can either join one of their six guided sightseeing tours or create your own Lake District adventure with exclusive private hire. Try ‘The Cross Lakes Experience’ daily throughout the summer from Bowness-on-Windermere with ferry service to the western shore of Windermere and mini coach service to visit Hill Top (the house of Beatrix Potter in the hamlet of Near Sawrey) and beyond.
Coniston Launch offers a variety of ways that you can enjoy a beautiful boat cruise on Coniston Water in the Lake District.
Regularly scheduled cruises regular services covering two different circular routes on Coniston Water, stay on the boat for the full cruise or stop off at any of the jetties to catch a later boat back – combine a boat cruise with a walk around the shore of Coniston Water.
Special Cruises Swallows and Amazons – Fun for those who are familiar with the Swallows & Amazons stories – 110 minute cruise.
Campbells on Coniston Cruise A comprehensive talk about the speed record attempts on Coniston Water from the late 1930s to the mid-60s – 75 minute cruise.
Located on the lakeshore of Derwentwater near to the Lakeland market town of Keswick, the launch company offers Lake District cruises around Derwentwater throughout the year.
The launches start their journey from the Keswick boat landings and cruise around the lake stopping at seven lakeshore jetties where you may embark or join the various boats. Alternatively, stay on the boat and enjoy the 50 minute trip around Derwentwater.
Keswick launches are a fantastic and convenient way to explore the Northern Lake District. Buy an explorer ticket and hop on and off the boats.
Windermere is England’s largest lake, in the heart of the Lake District. Windermere Lake cruises offer cruises from 45 minutes to 3 hours – or you can even spend all day on and around the lake with their fantastic ‘Freedom of the Lake’.
Their Park & Sail offering allows you to arrive at one of the 3 piers, spend a day on and around the lake, returning to your car at the end of a full and fun day out. Parking is available at all of the piers.
The ‘Cumbria Passenger Transport Map’ shows bus, rail and ferry services across Cumbria and is produced by the Integrated Transport Team at Cumbria County Council.
