Discover Hawkshead & Coniston

Hawkshead has flourished from its beginnings as a Medieval market town. With its cobbled streets, squares and courtyards surrounded by beautiful whitewashed cottages, topped with local Lakeland slate, there is a timeless feel the village.

Explore the warren of narrow passageways with interesting names such as Leather, Rag and Putty Street (now Wordsworth Street) and at every turn you can take in interesting architectural features – jettied frontages, external stairways, truncated corners and an old spinning gallery or two. Add a few ancient coaching inns and cosy tea rooms and Hawkshead has everything for an unhurried afternoon sojourn.

Coniston & Hawshead | Heart of the Lakes | Lake District Cottages

The scenery surrounding Hawkshead is some of the finest in the Lake District with the tranquil lake of Esthwaite Water, fringed by lush meadows and the wooded slopes of Grizedale Forest to the south, Lake Windermere to the east and Lake Coniston to the west, as well as the fine moorland encircling much of the area around Hawkshead.

Coniston is a blue and green slate traditional Lakeland working village on the edge of the lake and framed by The Old Man of Coniston, rising dramatically behind the houses when seen from the village centre.

Coniston water is most famously known for its association with Donald Campbell’s water speed record attempts.
