1. The Jumble Room

Sitting at the top of the list of our favourite Grasmere restaurants is The Jumble Room. A family-run restaurant situated in the heart of the village; The Jumble Room has been welcoming guests for 20 years.

“It’s not just a restaurant, it’s our way of life”.

This popular place to eat in Grasmere is beautifully adorned with a colourful, quirky interior. There’s an intimate seating area, with food served from 5:30pm every Thursday, Friday & Saturday.

All dishes are homemade using fresh ingreidents from local producers, farmers and artisans. Choose from an eclectic, Asian-inspired menu of nibbles, starters, mains, and desserts. There’s even a dessert wine flight if you fancy a tipple or three!

Due to the size of the restaurant, The Jumble Room doesn’t currently accept four-legged friends.

2. Forest Side

One of the best restaurants in Grasmere, Forest Side promises a fine dining experience like no other. Located within a gothic, fairytale-esk mansion, this Michelin-star Grasmere restaurant is a must-visit.

The menu is inspired by the landscape of the lakes, prepared with fresh, seasonal, locally sourced produce. There’s also an extensive wine list, complete with a choice of bio-dynamic, organic, and natural wine producers.

Head chef, Paul Leonard, serves a sophisticated 4 or 8-course menu, each lovingly created with interesting and unusual flavours and ingredients. You can expect to sample cod from the North Sea, cheese from The Courtyard Dairy and exclusive caviar.

The interior of this Grasmere restaurant only adds to the magical experience, with its wooden décor reflecting the rural landscape.

3. 1769 Bar & Restaurant

The only local village pub in Grasmere, 1769 Bar & Restaurant is an easy addition to our list of the best restaurants in Grasmere.

A quintessentially English pub, wooden beams, leather chesterfields and exposed brickwork form the interior décor. There’s a traditional wooden bar with hand-pulled ale, lager, and cider, along with wines, spirits, and soft drinks.

This Grasmere pub serves a menu of pub classics daily between 5:30pm – 21:30pm. You can expect the pie of the day, beer battered fish & chips, fresh salads, and sourdough pizzas.

And why not finish the day off with a dessert? With English Lakes ice cream and a cheeseboard of three local cheeses, there’s plenty to look forward to!

4. Greens Café and Bistro

The first Grasmere café to make our list is Greens Café and Bistro on College Street.

A pint-sized, local café, Greens opens its doors for breakfast and lunch, all prepared using fresh, seasonal ingredients. Priding itself on serving Cumbrian produce, local suppliers include Hawkshead Relish Company, Unsworth Brewery and English Lakes Ice cream.

Fuel a day of adventure with a bowl of porridge or grab a bacon butty to go. If you’re visiting at lunchtime, you’re spoilt for choice between light bites, sandwiches, jacket potatoes and salads.

There’s also a mouth-watering selection of cakes and pastries baked daily in-house.

With vegan, gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options available, this Grasmere café caters to a variety of dietary requirements.

5. Travellers Rest Inn

Enveloped by rural countryside, The Traveller’s Rest is a truly idyllic place to eat in Grasmere. Sitting on the outskirts of the village, this Grasmere pub makes handy pit-stop to refuel on the way in and out.

The rustic interior oozes traditional Lakeland character, with exposed beams, open fires, and hardwood flooring. Full of olde-worlde charm, this is the Grasmere that Wordsworth was inspired by.

The menu is brimming with hearty pub classics including steak & kidney pudding, ribeye steak and chickpea dahl. Alongside a mouth-watering choice of starters and desserts, you’re sure to find something to tantalize your tastebuds!

If you’re lucky enough to experience the warmer weather, there’s a sunny beer garden tucked behind the white-washed inn. Here you can soak in the spectacular scenery of the distant fells as you enjoy your favourite tipple.

6. The Good Sport

Overlooking the glistening waters of the River Rothay, The Good Sport is a purpose-built taproom serving Grasmere Brewery & Distillery drinks.

Grasmere Brewery & Distillery sits within two 19th century farm buildings, a short 100m from this Grasmere pub.

The Good Sport exclusively serves the full range of drinks, including lager, ale, cider, and spirits. All brewed in a small, experimental, local brewery, this is a true taste of Grasmere!

Alongside a fabulous choice of drinks, there’s a mouth-watering menu of homemade food to choose from. The sample menu includes classics such as fish and chips, burgers, and lasagne. For lighter bites, there’s also soups and sandwiches, and breakfast is available in the morning!

In the warmer weather, the leafy beer garden is an idyllic spot, whilst the open fire adds to the ambiance indoors.

7. Lewis’s Bistro

Idyllically positioned on Broadgate, in the centre of the village, Lewis’s Bistro is a charming, family-run restaurant in Grasmere.

Seating just 24 guests, booking a table is advised, and four-legged friends are welcome upon request.

One of our favourite places to eat in Grasmere, Lewis’ Bistro serves a hearty, homecooked menu. Think Cumbrian fillet steak, pork belly, mixed bean stew and Whitby scampi.

Prepared with local ingredients wherever possible, this Grasmere bistro is a wonderful choice.

There’s also a junior menu along with gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options. Opening its doors from 5:30pm Tuesday-Saturday, Lewis’s Bistro serves something to suit all appetites and preferences.
