When William Oxley built his country house on the southern slopes of Skiddaw in the late 19th century he chose his site well. This spectacular Italianate mansion with its manicured gardens and breathtaking lake and mountain views must have offered the busy Victorian industrialist a rural retreat beyond compare - the story goes that the gardens were even designed to allow him an uninterrupted view of his paramour's house down in the valley below. William was obviously a romantic at heart!
