We are sure that The Old Forge will be a very popular holiday destination. It is one of a tiny cluster of cottages at Hodge Close offering you a rare opportunity to stay in one of the truly remote parts of the central lakes being three and a half miles from Coniston and only 1 mile (on foot) from the famous Three Shires in Little Langdale.
The single storey cottage has been thoughtfully renovated and will surely please those looking for a country retreat with all the comforts of home. One of the most popular Lakeland walks passes the door but there is no passing traffic as you are virtually at the end of the surfaced lane.
The Old Forge can trace its history back to the days of the local quarry when metal tools, horse shoes and machinery were needed by the quarry workers. The spectacular quarry has been worked out for many years and is now used by rock-climbers, divers and other adventurers.
With walks all around and cycle tracks in the immediate area you will never be short of activities but if your intention is simply to unwind and relax then this charming cottage could be just the place for you.
Accommodation: The entrance porch leads into the newly fitted breakfast kitchen. An inner hallway accesses the sitting room with its pitched roof lines and supporting beams (log burner, flat screen TV, DVD, Wi-Fi). There are two bedrooms...a spacious double with king-size bed and pitched rooflines, and a smaller twin room. The newly fitted house bathroom has bath, separate shower, basin and wc.
One of the most attractive features of the cottage is the wide conservatory at the back...a wonderful, sunny space for dining and relaxing and with doors opening to the garden.
The cottage is fully equipped for a holiday in a fairly remote setting and is cosy and warm in all seasons. Furnishings throughout are all new and there are fitted carpets to most areas and slate in the kitchen. There are views from all of the front windows.
Outside: Garden areas with lawns to the front and rear of the house with varied levels and some higgledy-piggledy stone steps leading to raised seating areas. Garden table and chairs outside the conservatory and Summer House from September 2012. There are views across the valley to Wetherlam and the surrounding countryside. Lockable shed for bikes and outdoor gear. Parking for up to three cars.

Our second visit to Grisedale & we enjoyed it as much as the first time. Excellent accommodation - clean, comfortable, warm. Managed lots of walks - not used the car much at all. Good walk along the railway track to Threlkeld. A week's not long enough! Ho
After 25 years of annual Lakeland visits - we've decided this is the best cottage so far! Have booked same time next year!
